Water Charges
Fianna Fáil has consistently opposed the government’s Irish Water model which it rammed through Dáil Eireann in order to avoid real scrutiny.
Irish Water strips away functions from democratically accountable Local Authorities and places them in a new super quango created by the government. This entirely new layer of bureaucracy, populated by highly paid consultants (€50m last year alone), will be funded directly by homeowners across the country.
Instead of this glorified consultancy stimulus package the government should complete its audit of the network to identify faults. From this starting point the network should then be comprehensively upgraded and brought to standard to ensure homeowners pay for a service that genuinely delivers.
